Excellence Awards 2020
At this time of year we normally prepare for our AGM and presentation of our annual awards. Sadly, this will not take place but here is a message from Brian Harrild, organiser of the awards, who has just retired from our Committee:
Traditionally, I say at our annual meeting what a great pleasure it is to be here to announce the names of those who are to receive the year's Excellence Awards. This time the pleasure remains, albeit from my self-isolation lair.
Southwold and Reydon are places where the seemingly impossible becomes a reality, for example:
Do you dream of somewhere to which you can take young children to play outdoors in a safe environment with the toys provided while you relax with refreshments? The Pit Stop Cafe is your answer.
"Presented to ANNE CLARKE for providing a unique facility for families and extensive fundraising for charity."
Do you marvel at how difficult it is to find a piece of litter in Reydon? The answer lies in the tireless work of our very own litter picker.
"Presented to GILLIAN GRAHAM for keeping Reydon litter free in all weathers."
Do you yearn to regularly improve your health by exercising just to the degree that you wish? The answer can be found by joining the Great Run Local, Sunday after Sunday.
"Presented to SAFFRON MANNING and JANE SAMKIN for improving the health of our community by organising the Great Run Local, Sunday after Sunday in all weathers for over five years."
Do you wish that the charges for your utilities could be reduced at no cost to you and without high pressure sales talk? The answer lies with our final nominee who also organises a Christmas party for the whole community.
"Presented to MELANIE WILSON for organising a highly successful community event and pursuing a service-before-profit approach to her utilities business."
Our congratulations to all those above and here's a special message for...
BRIAN HARRILD (sorry, Brian, if this comes as a bit of a surprise) :
You have contributed to the Southwold and Reydon Society Committee for longer than I can recall, including a number of years as Treasurer characterised by exceptionally precise and impeccable bookkeeping. You have also contributed for years to local life in many other ways - among them as a long serving treasurer of the Scouts & Reydon Show and as an organiser of Church lunches ("an amiable and kind raconteur").
I am delighted to add the citation for your own Excellence Award:
"Presented to BRIAN HARRILD for many years of service to the community and active association with the 1st Southwold Scouts, the Reydon Show, St Margaret's Church and the Southwold and Reydon Society".
Ridley Burnett, Chairman
